The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently released a revised Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) Form and an updated “M-274, Handbook for Employers: Instructions for Completing Form I-9” for use on or after April 3, 2009.

On that date, all U.S. employers must use the revised version of the Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of each person they hire for employment in the United States. The current edition of the form (dated 06/05/2007) will no longer be valid. Employers who continue to use that version on or after April 3 may be subject to civil penalties, sanctions, or jail.
